A Preschool program's quality is largely a product of the training of the instructor.  The minimum employment requirement at many daycare centers is only a high school degree and a weeks long training course provided by the center.  For this training, centers charge top dollar.  Our Teacher, after six years of college study, received her Masters in Education at The Center for Contemporary Montessori Programs at The College of St. Catherine.  The Center is the only American Montessori Society (AMS) certified program in the Upper Midwest.

Many people don't realize that there is no official process to learn or use the Montessori Method.  This means someone who teaches at a Montessori school and calls themselves a Montessori teacher could have an education ranging from a several week long home study course to a masters degree.  Societies like AMS establish strict requirements for certification and ensure that teacher's are thoroughly and properly trained on both the theory and practice of the Montessori Method.  The AMS is the most widely recognized Montessori credential in the United States.

We strongly recommend that parents considering a Montessori preschool ask who certified the teachers education and then research that certification.  It is our opinion that the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Association Montessori International (AMI) are the only two American programs that faithfully follow all the teachings of Maria Montessori.  We feel that mixing concepts of The Montessori Method ala cart with other educational philosophies, as many centers do, dilutes many of the benefits the Montessori Method provides.
